General Climate Information

The Republic of Korea is a peninsula located in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and the Temperate Zone with four distinct seasons namely, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Geographically, the peninsula lies on the east coast of the Eurasian Continent adjacent to the West Pacific. Busan is located at the southeastern most tip of the Korean peninsula and experiences seasonal winds and strong sun shine, making it advisable to wear hats and sunglasses when going out.

Spring begins in March and ends late June. The summer, from late June to the end of August, is hot and humid with frequent heavy rainfalls associated with the East-Asian Monsoon, locally referred to as "Changma". On the average, Changma continues for 30 days when frequent heavy rains and flash floods can lead to some natural disasters. Of about 28 typhoons generated annually in the Northwest Pacific, typically around 2 or 3 influence the Korean Peninsula from June to October.

The hottest time of the year is usually experienced from the end of July through to mid-August where daily temperatures can be as high as 32°C. Autumn starts early in September and lasts until late in November. The Autumn weather is very pleasant and it is common to have glorious sunny days with refreshingly cool winds. Winter starts close to the end of November and continues through until February. The average winter temperature is around 3.8°C which is not too cold.

The mild Spring and Autumn combined with hot Summers and not particularly cold Winters, make Busan an ideal all year round destination. In particular, summer is popular with visitors coming to enjoy the beautiful beaches but the beauty of Spring and Autumn are also enviable times.

The annual average rain fall in Busan is around 1,500mm. Other recent weather data for the Busan area can be found below.
