Train Information

Korea has an excellent railroad network which provides an efficient and affordable means of travel throughout the Korean peninsula. Busan Station is located in downtown Busan (Subway Line 1 station number 13) and is the principal station in the southeast region. Busan is the starting point of the Gyeongbu railroad (see also KTX below), Donghae railroad and Gyeong-jeon railroad, which link Busan with other cities including Seoul, Daegu, and Daejeon. Prices vary depending upon destination.

In particular, the Gyeongbu railroad links Busan and Seoul via Daegu, Gumi, Daejeon, Cheonan and Suwon. There are three classes of service: Saemaeul, Mugungwha, and Tongilho. Saemaeul trains are express trains that make fewer stops. Mugungwha and Tongilho trains run along the Gyeong-jeon line via Samnangjin, Masan and Mokpo. Mugungwha trains also run along the Donghae line via Ulsan, Gyeongju, Pohang, Gangneung and Seoul.

KTX - The New High Speed Train

Map showing the KTX rail network The newly opened high-speed KTX train line between Busan And Seoul (the Gyeongbu Line) provides quick and easy travel between Korea's two main cities. See adjacent map.

KTX travel times between Busan and Seoul are less than 3-hours and when the fast track section between  Busan and Daejeon is complete, journey times will further reduce. One main advantage is that he KTX provides a link between city centres and so reducing travel time to and from the airports, which are often outside the city itself.

The KTX train provides a comfortable travel method and is set to become the preferred transportation of the next generation. Ticket purchasing can made via a reservation system, but should be made one week in advance. The reservation telephone number is +82 51 1544-8545. See also http://ktx.korail.go.kr

Subway Network Information

The Busan subway network basically consists of two lines, 'Line 1' and 'Line 2'. Line 1 runs generally North-South from Sinpyeong to Nopo-dong and visa-versa. Line 2 runs generally East-West from Hopo to Jangsan and vise-versa.  Both lines run from 05:20am to about Midnight and trains depart from each station every 5 minutes or so. Both stations signs and train announcements are made in both Korean and English language, so it is relatively navigate the subway network.

Lines 1 & 2 cross at the main interchange of Seomyeon, the subway station itself being immediately underneath the Lotte Hotel and shopping complex. Line 2 is the newest line and further extensions are ongoing. There will also eventually be a third line (Line 3) when construction is complete.
